Today I only had a few hours to work at my placement because I was scheduled to work at 3:30 in champaign. Kent assinged me several new projects, including writing demand letters for personal injury cases. I felt honored that he trusted me enough to do this on my own, especially since I have never seen a demand letter... Sarah is going to be helping me through this process this week. Since I only had about two hours to work, Kent asked me to look through a case settlement file and summarize the main points of it. A man was killed on a motorcycle by a drunk driver and the family was now suing for not only wrongful death, but also for something called DRAMSHOP. I had never heard of this before but basically dram shop is a law that says that any business that provides liquor to an individual can then be help responsible for that individual's actions, even after they leave their property. This particular bar and the owner of the property on which it was built were sued for over $80,000, which I find crazy because in no way was it their fault that the man decided to drive while under the influence of alcohol. It certainly helped the family however, which I am glad to hear.
