Getting Familiar with New Dietary Guidelines

3/9/11
NEW VOCAB: glucosamine-a nutritional supplement that may improve symptoms of pain and stiffness caused by osteoarthritis
xylitol-a sugar alcohol
Today was a pretty typical afternoon at Nutrition on the Move at Strawberry Fields. For the first part of my internship today, I helped invite people via Facebook to a spaghetti supper that Susan and her interns are hosting in about a month to help raise money for the food bank. By the way, Susan asked me to invite ALL of the people in the internship program (that means you guys :) ) to come to this dinner as well! It is on Sunday, April 17 from 5-7PM at the kitchen in the ARC recreational center on campus. Let me know if you want to come-I should be getting some tickets to sell soon!
Anyway, besides this, Brittany (intern) and I also got to listen to Susan's radio show that she had done that morning. I felt really disappointed because I had thought her show was the previous morning, and when I found out it was Wednesday morning, I couldn't come because I had things I needed to take care of at school (F). I realized the importance of making sure you write down proper dates and times for meetings and events (A)! However, it all turned out okay because I still got to listen to her show, which was mainly about the new dietary guidelines for 2010. Susan mentioned that these new guidelines are different from previous guidelines in several ways, especially in the fact that they stress more what we SHOUD be doing/eating instead of what we should NOT be doing/eating. Of course, we need to eat lots and lots of fruits and veggies, and physical activity is important. Another important point is to reduce sodium intake. During the show, one woman called in and asked a question that I had always wondered myself: is high fructose corn syrup really worse than sugar? Susan's opinion on the topic is that they really are pretty much the same, and that we should be limiting all added sugars, whether it is table sugar or HFCS. This was interesting for me to learn!
