LEGAL WORK! 3/31/11

Demand letter- Letter sent to the opposing party stating what you're claiming and your reason for the demand

This entire week has been really laid back and I've done my work on my own pace. Today has been mainly focused on the most recent project Shayla assigned me. What's so exciting about this project is that it's legit legal work that will go out to someone we are sueing!!! Basically one of our client's paid to take a transportation service to the airport in Chicago. On the way to the airport the driver of the van fell asleep and ran into the median causing the car to spin and flip. Our client was severly injured with several broken ribs, a broken arm and hand, bruises in her stomach and other painful injuries. She hired Shayla because she wants to sue the transportation company's insurance company because of her personal injury. I sat in on the meeting so I heard her entire story. Shayla then said that I would get to work with this case. She assigned me to write the demand letter to the insurance company. I was super nervous about this because my legal vocabulary is not very extensive and I really want to do a professional job on this letter. Thankfully I'm taking AP English with Mrs. Meng who really tears apart your papers, so I think I've learned a couple things about writing this year. ANYWAY, so Shayla gave me a couple examples of some previous letters she wrote and gave me our client's files and told me to have at it. So far I've written a pretty good amount of the letter, but I know I still have a lot to go. The hardest part is trying to piece together all of the medical reports, traffic reports, and handwritten notes which give details about the crash and our client's injuries. Shayla hasn't been in the office yet while I've been here so I know I won't finish today because I have several issues I need help with. Overall, I'm glad Shayla assigned me to this project because she is letting me get a hands-on experience with legal work and I think I could be really good at it.
