Monday 3/14
Today involved a lot of stops and starts. I spent my first hour just chatting with grad students waiting for our professors to return from lunch. They had some fun high school stories and enjoyed hearing my experiences in school as well. I realized that a lot of us really do have quite a bit in common even though some went to private school, or lived in an entirely different country. It made the students more relatable and I felt like I belonged a little more. Next, we hurried up to the kitchen and I got to make my first batch of CSB (corn soy blend for those of you who have forgotten)! It was much more complicated than cooking in my old kitchen. I had to weigh everything, and by everything I mean the pots, spatulas, measuring cups, ingredients and thermometers both before and after cooking. Our final product was a sort of corn-like cream of wheat. I tasted it and I can honestly say it wasn't that bad. Still, I don't think I could eat an entire bowl of it every day, especially in the hot Honduran sun. Luckily, our entire class will be able to try it on April 29th!
