TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 8

Today was a pretty normal day at Follmer Law Offices. I arrived and Kent had some clients outside his office waiting and I didn't want to bother him by asking what I should begin so I just continued to create an inventory of the Will Vault. The Will Vault is a huge metal safe in the corner of the office in which we store most of the wills we have on file. Kent told me that every law office is required to have one to protect their wills from being damaged by fire, flooding, break-ins, etc. It has an old fashioned spin lock and a super long combination. I usually have to do it 2 or 3 times before I can actually get it opened haha. It's actually pretty interesting to look at though. It looks like something out of a bank from the 1920's. Kent's dad (also a lawyer at the office), Clive, told me a little bit of the history behind it. Anyways, there is a ton of wills and trusts in there that need to be recorded and later entered into an excel worksheet and since I am the unpaid intern, I get the joy fulfilling that responsibility. Lucky me.
After Kent was done with his clients, I met with him briefly to discuss my to-do list for the week. He had me make several copies and organize some files and then mentioned that he was remodeling his house and if I had ever been interested in architecture. I was a little surprised when he handed me a file pertaining to the remodeling of his kitchen and asked me to draw a picture to scale of the layout. At first I was a little nervous because math and conversions have never been my strong point but I've always liked to draw so I got right to work. It was actually really fun to draw out the story of a house directly to scale of the real square footage. I had to be very specific with my measurements because Kent was planning on using my drawing to order new floors for his house. I finished the drawing in about an hour and Kent seemed really happy with the results. We made a few tweeks but overall it was a success.
Even though it had nothing to do with law, I really enjoyed this assignment and am happy to be learning a variety of skills through my work at Follmer Law Offices.
