COURTROOM FIELD TRIP! 2/9/11
Today my sponsor had a hearing at 11am for a case concerning a property dispute. Not only was this case probably the most interesting that I have seen since I've started, but I also got to leave school early! The hearing lasted for about an hour, and then she had another divorce case that lasted another hour. The first case should be really familiar to Robin because her attorney is working on the opposing side of the case. Basically, the two families in dispute share a driveway because they are neighbors. Our client's neighbor's wanted to enlarge the driveway using our client's property because they felt it was too difficult to get in and out of the driveway. This case has been going on for about two years and the tension between the two have esculated to the point where court orders have been placed to keep the two away from each other. I got to meet our client's family and another hearing has been set for later this month. I definitely want to attend the next one because not only will our clients be present, but the opossing attorney and his clients as well (D). I know there is going to be a lot of tension and I'm excited to see my attorney in action. After going to this hearing I felt more excited about someday becoming an attorney myself (F). I know that I will want to spend a lot of my time in court which means I'll probably be a litegant (a courtroom lawyer). Being in court today showed me that an attorney must be a very quick thinker and keep their mind open to all the different ways the law can be twisted to prove a point (A). The biggest thing I learned today was that I will definitely want to represent clients with cases that are not so easy to interpret, because I want to argue a lot with the other attorneys haha :].
