Interview! 2/14/11

Today started off pretty slow in the office because all of the attorneys were in a meeting. I didn't have any current projects to work on, so I kept myself busy by preparing myself for the interview I was going to give one of the attorneys. About 20 minutes after I arrived the attorney I would be interviewing came back from her meeting. Aside from my sponsor, I probably relate best with her. After having our usual casual conversation, I asked her if she had time for me to interview her today (I had already asked her last week). Some of the questions I asked her required her to think more about her answers, which made me feel like I wasn't wasting her time. I learned a lot more about becoming an attorney and what the job entitles from this interview. For example, she taught me that a law office breaks down their work periods in increments of 6 minutes. So if you have a 6 minute or less phone conversation with a client, then you document your time under the 6 minute category. Throughout the interview our conversation would side track to different cases she was working on and we would realize that we got completely off track haha. Yet, everything we talked about gave me more answers to my questions regarding becoming a lawyer. After the interview she even gave me a small project to work on. I had to look through a wife's deceased husband's will and give a brief summary about what he left to who and for how long. This was great experience for me because the termanology lawyers use in wills and other documents of that nature can be very confusing, so analyzing this will helped me understand the language of law a little better. When I finished she was very pleased with my work. To end the day my sponsor gave me another spreadsheet to work on, but it didn't take me hardly any time because I now understand what she's looking for in the tables and charts I make for her. Overall, I felt very accomplished today.
