Thursday, April 7
Today started off like most other days at Follmer Law Offices, nothing special. Sarah asked me to take over phones for the day while she handled some billing so I did that. I also worked on a demand letter for one of our personal injury cases. This man was riding his motorcycle when he was rear-ended by a car and he now has sharp back pains. It's exciting for me to work on this case because I was assigned to create the demand letter completely on my own, which I have obviously never done before. It's pretty easy and interesting so I'm content for the moment. Later in the afternoon Kent called me into his office to speak about another personal injury case that we are in the process of settling. Kent called the insurance company on the phone and they informed us that they had read over our demand letter and were prepared to offer the client $100,000 to settle the case. I knew this was a big deal because as soon as Kent heard that his face lit up and he smiled the biggest smile I have ever seen him smile. When he got off the phone and explained to me that in personal injury cases such as this the lawyer usually recieves 1/3 of the settlement agreement. He explained that this client was referred to him by one of his old law clerks so he would now have to divide his 1/3 of the $100,000 into another 1/3 for the law clerk. Kent was really excited and said that he was not expecting it to be this easy by any means and that cases like this usually take years and years to settle. Well that put him in a pretty good mood so he gave me an interesting project that he thought would benefit me if I was ever to enter law school. He printed off several cases that have to do with large settlements like this and explains different rulings of the Court. Kent wants me to brief these cases and summarize their relevance. Since they are just print offs and not actual documents that belong to clients he told me that I could take them home to work on. YAY more hours for me! :)
