Real Food!

Today started with an adventure. I haven't seen my lab notebook in a couple weeks since Pablo used it for some calculations from the freeze-drier. Today we needed to look back on an old procedure so we got to looking. We were both pretty scared because losing that data would be REALLY BAD. Still, it was kind of an adventure because we had to look through our two labs, the office. Finally, we made one last stop at a lab across the street and it was right on the bench! We were both pretty relieved. I guess the moral of the story is always know where your data is otherwise all your lab work needs to be redone. No one wants to waste time.
I also got the chance to attend FSHN 131 today. This is Introductory Food Lab for Food Science and Dietetic majors.
It was really fun! We were in a SUPER nice kitchen that was recently remodeled. The class was making quick breads which
is basically scones, muffins, and biscuits. They're called quick breads because they use a form of leavening other than yeast.
Each station made a different item, but they made enough so everyone could have some. I was in charge of cream puffs. They
are pretty cool because they use their own steam from the oven to rise instead of yeast or baking soda. I got to try chocolate
and cranberry scones, fruit medley shortcake, southern-style biscuits, banana muffins, vegan pumpkin muffins, jalapeno
cheese muffins, apple spice muffins, and corn bread. I have to say that the cream puffs were my favorite though, and it seemed
like other people liked them as well. It was just nice to eat food other than corn soy blend!
