1-17-11 Surpassing The Basics

After my first week at Christie I knew I would be exposed to different medical situations and Dr. Escobar made it clear I would learn to interact with patients and seat them to their rooms and overall handle the jobs nurses were doing. [A]  Today i began my training on seating patients and handling the minor task before the doctor stepped into the room.  I had to admit at first I was worried that I would not be able to remember what to do and forget  minor details.[E]  However the nurses walked me through with all of the details and I realized that it was all just a simple process. [A] When I started the nurses would join me and talk to patients with me just to make sure that I had everything under control and just to analyze how well I can interact with patients.  They quickly found out that I'm actually extremely comfortable in a medical environment and I handled patients with care and eaze.  After lunch the hospital became increasingly busy and it came to the point where every nurse was busy either with a patient or doing preparations for surgery for the next day.  I took this oppurtunity to truly test out my skills as a future doctor and seated patients by myself.  I took charts and took x-rays and took their blood pressures.  The x-ray process was especially easy for me.  I simply just adjust the x-ray machine and do a series of tasks to prep the patient then take their x-rays and develop them. [D]  After their x-rays finish processign I would take them into a room and ask a series of medical questions and say "Okay Dr. Escobar will be there in just a minute have a nice day".  When the charts slowly decreased the nurses wondered who was seating all the patients and where the charts were going.  They were highly impressed with my willingness to seat the patients and impressed that I did a great job with them.  Dr. Escobar was extremely impressed with my natural talents and how quicly I caught on to things.  I felt highly confident in myself and my abilities and everyone noticed how naturally everything came to me. [E]  Dr. Escobar proclaimed that this week he would train me so that within a month or so I would be in surgery with him not to watch, but to assist him and the assistant.  Normally I would be nervous, however I have a feeling theres nothing to worry about and after training and practice I'll have no problem assisting.
