Upon my first day shadowing Dr. Escobar I was highly nervous. [F] I had no idea what I was going to do or what he was going to have me doing. When Mrs. Sherrick and I talked to him months back, he said I was going to be able to do a variety of tasks such as taking blood pressures, seeing patients, and even assisting him in surgery. I was both anxious and nervous as to how he would utilize my abilities and skills. [F] As soon as I arrived he rushed me into the surgery and suggested I watch very closely, because soon enough I would be assisting him in surgery. The very first surgery I saw happened to be a wisdom teeth surgery. I was fascinated on the complexity of the surgery. There was much more involved than just pulling teeth out. [A] First the nurses injected him with different medications to not only put him to sleep but control the numbness and to prevent naussia. Once the patient is in deep slumber, Dr. Escober and an assistant begin the surgery.[D] He begins with injecting the patitents gums with a drug that helps decrease swelling and provide a numbing sensation when the patient wakes up. Once all the necessary pre-cautions are taken he directs his attention to the teeth. This particular patient happens to have his wisdom teeth embedded under his gums, so unfortunately for him Dr. Escobar had to cut into his gums and search for the wisdom teeth. Once found it was not as easy as pulling it out instead he used a small drill to cut the tooth into pieces and pull each piece out. [D] Once the tooth has been fully removed and no stray pieces exist he stitches the insition and moves on to the next tooth. I've learned that the top teeth are much easier to pull out than the bottom, all he needed to do for the top teeth was, cut the gums around the teeth and simply use a tool and pry the tooth out. [A] One would think this process would take at least an hour but to my fascination he completed this task in just 15 minutes. [A] I was amazed to say the least how quickly he turned such a complicated process into a simply task. [E] As I stood in the OR (operating room) shocked and filled with awe, he turned to me and said "I you caught all that because starting next week we're going to train you to assist me". I was ecstatic to hear this, because I've always been fascinated with surgery and now I've been presented with an oppurtunity to learn from and watch a highly skilled surgeon. [E] This happened all on my first day so im looking forward to what different things I shall be exposed to while under the wings of the talented Dr. Escobar.
